Kevin Gates shared some of the most personal moments of his life during a recent appearance on Club Shay Shay, speaking candidly with host Shannon Sharpe about loss, trauma, and how those experiences shaped him.
During the conversation, Gates reflected on the death of his father, who passed away from AIDS when Gates was a teenager. He explained that his father contracted the illness through infected needles and said that experience is what pushed him toward holistic health practices later in life. Gates expressed a deeply personal belief that, with what he knows now, he could have helped his father.
“That’s what made me get into holistic medicine,” Gates said, noting that he spent significant time with his father before he died and learned lasting lessons from him. He emphasized that his focus on health and wellness stems directly from that loss.
Gates also spoke openly about surviving sexual abuse as a child, revealing that the person who harmed him is now deceased. He explained that confronting and processing that trauma allowed him to break what he described as generational cycles of abuse within his family.
He shared that these experiences shaped how he parents, particularly in creating open and honest conversations with his children. Gates said he’s intentional about making sure his kids know they can speak freely with him and understand personal boundaries, something he believes helps protect them and builds trust.
According to Gates, being open about his past has also had a broader impact. He described moments where men approach him in public, emotionally thanking him for speaking out and giving them permission to be vulnerable themselves. In his view, sharing these stories helps others begin the work of healing and protecting their “inner child.”
The episode stood out as one of Gates’ most vulnerable interviews to date, offering a deeper look at how pain, reflection, and self-awareness have influenced both his personal life and his approach to growth.
