In a historic turn of events, Meek Mill, alongside JAY-Z and Michael Rubin, celebrated a significant victory as the Pennsylvania probation bill was signed into law. The emotional moment, captured during a press conference, revealed Meek Mill’s deep connection to the cause, stemming from his personal battles within the legal system since 2008.
The Pennsylvania Governor, Josh Shapiro, officially signed Senate Bill 838 into law on December 14, marking the 18th triumph for the REFORM Alliance in its 11th state. The legislation aims to bring crucial reforms to Pennsylvania’s probation rules, addressing the challenges faced by the formerly incarcerated and striving to reduce recidivism.
For Meek Mill, this victory goes beyond the legal intricacies. Having experienced a 2-4 year sentence in 2017 due to a technical probation violation, he expressed his struggle against a system that often labels individuals unfairly. His emotional words resonated as he shared, “I had to fight against that the whole time to gain my respect and be who I am today, and I’m proud of that.”
Even hours after the press conference, Meek Mill took to Twitter to express his surprise at the overwhelming emotions: “I don’t know how I cried on the news I ain’t even cry in my cell! I needed that!”
The passage of this bill is not just a personal triumph for Meek Mill and his allies; it symbolizes a step forward in criminal justice reform. Michael Rubin, CEO of Fanatics and a key player in the REFORM Alliance, emphasized the significance of this victory, stating, “We started @reform with one goal – fix the broken probation and parole laws and get 1 million people out of the system who shouldn’t be there while keeping communities safe.”
