Ayesha Curry is done letting a years-old narrative define her love story. During a recent appearance on the IMO (In My Opinion) podcast alongside Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, she addressed previous comments about her husband Stephen Curry that had sparked online debate, offering a candid clarification that reframed the entire conversation.
“Let’s clear it up,” she said directly. The controversy stemmed from remarks suggesting athletes weren’t her type growing up. Ayesha explained the reality was far more nuanced—and deeply personal. At 14, she wasn’t simply disinterested in athletes; she wasn’t allowed to talk to boys at all. More importantly, her comments weren’t about Steph lacking appeal. They were about her own teenage insecurity.
“Did I think you were cute? Absolutely,” she admitted. “What I was saying was, I didn’t think I was his type.”
Ayesha described herself then as a “nerdy theater kid,” someone who couldn’t imagine a standout athlete like Steph being interested in someone like her. The moment on the podcast turned into a sincere, lighthearted apology to her husband. “Very disrespectful on my part,” she acknowledged, recognizing how the original statement could have been perceived.
She also contextualized her “no athlete” rule from adolescence, explaining it as a form of self-protection—”protecting my peace”—rather than a blanket dismissal. When things with Steph began developing, she was initially confused by the unexpected direction and verbalized that uncertainty to him.
The couple first met as teenagers, reconnected years later, and built the partnership fans admire today. While some online had questioned Ayesha’s original comments, others defended her, noting she was barely a teenager at the time.
Now, her clarification lands with refreshing honesty: Steph was always her type. She just needed time to believe she could be his too.
