Disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly remains locked into a long prison sentence, with recent reports reinforcing that he is not getting out anytime soon. While speculation about an earlier release has circulated for years, those hopes appear increasingly unrealistic. According to a report from CBS News, cited by RapTV, Kelly’s projected release date is December 21, 2045—meaning he still has roughly 19 years left to serve.
Kelly, who has been housed at a medium-security federal facility in Butner, North Carolina since April 2023, has repeatedly pursued legal avenues to shorten his sentence. His most recent major effort came in August 2025, when he attempted to disqualify the U.S. Attorney’s Office from his case. That motion was swiftly denied by Martha Pacold, who sharply criticized the filing.

In her ruling, Judge Pacold described the request as excessive, stating that disqualifying an entire U.S. Attorney’s Office would require an “extraordinary showing”—one that Kelly failed to provide. She rejected the motion outright, effectively closing another door in his push for relief. Other attempts, including requests for a new trial and immediate home detention, have also been unsuccessful.
Despite his continued legal battles, Kelly has remained active behind bars. Alongside filing motions and challenging the justice system, he has reportedly continued making music. Earlier this month, a controversial audio clip surfaced of Kelly singing over “It Depends” by Chris Brown. The snippet sparked backlash after prominent figures such as Teddy Riley publicly promoted it on social media.
Riley went further, posting a birthday message for Kelly and teasing future music, calling him the “King of R&B”—a move that left many observers stunned given Kelly’s convictions and incarceration.
Kelly is currently serving a 30-year federal prison sentence. In 2021, following his New York trial, he was convicted on charges including racketeering, sex trafficking, forced labor, and sexual exploitation of children. The following year, he was found guilty in Chicago on multiple counts of producing child pornography and enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity. Many of these sentences are being served concurrently.
While Kelly continues to challenge his incarceration from behind bars, the reaffirmation of his 2045 release date makes it increasingly clear that his chances of early freedom are slim.
