Drake vs. UMG: When Rap Beef Meets the Courtroom

Rap beef is usually settled on wax, not in courtrooms — but Drake isn’t backing down. The Toronto superstar is officially appealing the dismissal of his lawsuit against Universal Music Group over their alleged role in promoting Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”

The record-breaking diss track, which many saw as the knockout punch in Kendrick and Drake’s lyrical feud, is now at the heart of a complex legal fight. Drake insists UMG crossed the line from promotion to sabotage.

Judge Jeannette Vargas, however, disagreed. She ruled that Kendrick’s “I heard you like ’em young” lyric wasn’t defamation, calling it “a direct callback” to Drake’s own bars from “Taylor Made Freestyle.” Translation: it’s all part of the game.

Drake’s camp says the fight isn’t over, and they’re taking the case to a higher court. Whether the appeal changes anything legally remains to be seen — but culturally, it reinforces Drake’s refusal to accept defeat, even outside the booth.
