Joe Budden is known for being one of Jay-Z’s biggest supporters, but even he wasn’t entirely sold on the Roc Nation mogul’s headline-grabbing freestyle at the Roots Picnic.
During a recent episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, Budden shared his thoughts on Jay-Z’s viral performance, which featured apparent shots aimed at several high-profile figures, including Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, and others.
While many fans celebrated the freestyle, Budden argued that Jay-Z may have been above engaging in that type of public back-and-forth.
One of the lines that stood out to Budden was Jay-Z’s apparent response to Drake. During the freestyle, Hov suggested that Drake looked up to him, while also emphasizing that he never viewed Drake in the same way.
Budden questioned the effectiveness of the jab, noting that most people already acknowledge Jay-Z’s influence and status within hip-hop. In his view, pointing out that younger artists looked up to him wasn’t much of a revelation.
However, several of Budden’s co-hosts disagreed.
Emanny pointed out that Drake had previously referenced Jay-Z on ICEMAN, including lyrics suggesting he would choose financial opportunities over a famous dinner with the rap legend. From that perspective, Jay’s bars could be interpreted as a direct response rather than an unprovoked attack.
Meanwhile, co-host Ice offered another interpretation. He suggested Jay-Z may have been referencing Drake’s pursuit of chart records and commercial milestones, particularly after Drake surpassed one of Jay’s long-standing Billboard achievements.
According to Ice, Jay’s message may have been less about influence and more about reminding Drake that there are different levels of success beyond chart placements.
Budden remained unconvinced.
He argued that diminishing Drake’s accomplishments felt unnecessary, especially considering Drake’s enormous impact on music over the last decade and a half. Budden also suggested that someone with Jay-Z’s wealth, legacy, and stature doesn’t need to spend time addressing younger rivals in public.
The discussion eventually turned toward Jay-Z’s past comments about rap beef and competition. Budden previously criticized the freestyle because he felt it contradicted remarks Jay had made in earlier interviews, where he expressed skepticism about the culture surrounding modern rap battles.
For Budden, the issue wasn’t the quality of the bars—it was the decision to engage at all.
The debate highlights just how divided opinions remain regarding Jay-Z’s Roots Picnic performance. Some fans see it as a masterful reminder of his dominance and influence, while others believe an artist of his stature has little left to prove.
With speculation continuing about a possible response from Drake and persistent rumors of new Jay-Z music on the horizon, the conversation surrounding the freestyle shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
